Hospitals & Special Settings

Guide. Nurture. Inspire

Stones, Bones and Stars was developed and refined in both hospital and mainstream school settings. Consideration of the needs of young people in special and alternative educational settings has figured prominently in the evolution of the program. The program is powerfully informed by an awareness of the impact of issues such as trauma, compromised mental and physical health, illness, disability and disadvantage, upon the well-being, learning and lives of young people.

SB&S  presenter, Greg Stewart, has extensive experience in teaching and supporting young people in special settings and those with additional needs in mainstream schools. He is highly skilled at quickly engaging and establishing a positive rapport with, students, classes, patients and audiences and providing learning experiences that are founded upon, and in turn, foster, fundamental principles of compassion, sensitivity, respect, understanding, inclusiveness and valuing of difference.

Individual students and groups engage strongly and mindfully within Stones, Bones and Stars sessions. They have fun, are diverted and are quietly challenged and inspired to unlock the secrets of the mysterious museum-style treasures presented to them, while building their knowledge, critical thinking and personal and social capabilities.

As noted in greater detail on the Primary and Secondary Schools page, Stones, Bones and Stars :

  • Incorporates key High Impact Teaching strategies (HITS) linked to FISO  to generate strong learning and experiential outcomes for students.

  • Embraces core Learning Area and Capabilities components of the Victorian Curriculum, including the learning areas of Science, English, Humanities and Technology and Critical and Creative Thinking, Ethical, Intercultural and Personal and Social Capabilities.

Stones, Bones and Stars has been included in the curriculum of primary and secondary inpatient and outpatient programs at the Austin Hospital School, delivering rich student learning experiences and outcomes.
